INTRODUCTION

Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation indicates the school based evaluation of students, in which all aspects of his development are covered. It was introduced by the CENTRAL BOARD OF SECONDARY EDUCATION (CBSE) mandated by Right to Education of India in 2009.
It includes the use of various tools and techniques for evaluating learners which helps in identifying the strengths and weaknesses.

ETYMOLOGY

Continuous-

It denotes that evaluation is a process that is incorporated in teaching and learning and it also indicates its regularity and analyzing the limitations of learning and applying appropriate remedial measures.

Comprehensive-

It indicates that the development of students both in scholastic ( academic) and non scholastic (co- academic ) areas.

Evaluation-

It is a process of achieving behavioral changes by using suitable tools and techniques by which decision regarding directions and limitations is taken.

DEFINITIONS

Comprehensive and Continuous Evaluation should include both scholastic and non scholastic features of evaluation , spread over the total duration of instructional time.

THE NATIONAL POLICY OF EDUCATION (1986)

School based Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation System be formed in order to – minimize the stress of children, create evaluation comprehensive and regular or uniform, give space for the teachers for creative teaching, give a tool for recognition and for producing learners with greater skills.

NATIONAL CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK (2005)

OBJECTIVES

  • Helps in developing cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains.
  • Lays Emphasis on thought process and de emphasize rote memorization.
  • Make Evaluation an integral part of teaching and learning process.
  • Improves Achievement of learners by using Evaluation strategies on a regular basis and followed by remedial measures.
  • Desired standard of performance is maintained by using evaluation as a quality control device.
  • Makes Teaching Learning a student centered activity.
  • Determines social utility, desirability or effectiveness of a programme and facilitates decision making.

Learning and Continuous comprehensive evaluation process go hand in hand, only after giving sufficient learning opportunities for the child one can evaluate their progress.

  • PRINCIPLE OF INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES

The child ‘s development or progress should be compared to his own past and not with the development or progress of other children as every child is different with different strengths and weaknesses.

ROLE OF TEACHER

  • Criteria of Assessment should be shared with learners and parents to let the students know what is expected from them.
  • A friendly environment is created by the teacher to reduce fear and stress of assessment by promoting self and peer assessment of learners.
  • Learners and Parents Involvement is promoted.
  • Traditional remarks like slow learner, poor performance, stupid etc should be avoided as it lowers self esteem of the learners.
  • Different teaching techniques and apparatus should be used for conceptual learning.

CONCLUSION

Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation is understood as such a process that aims the holistic development of the learner which is done on a regular basis to develop cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains. It involves various tools and techniques which are necessary for evaluation.
In CBSE schools 4 Formative Assessment and 2 Summative Assessment system is generally followed.
